old-time country songs
I have been carrying these songs with me for as long as I can remember. My mother sang some of them and some I learned some from my grandfather. They were simply in the air, on the radio, on records. Many are associated with the original Carter Family. What they all have in common is that they were recorded in New York for Moe Asch by Woody Guthrie, Cisco Houston and Sonny Terry in 1944. On April 19 Woody and Cisco recorded fifty-six songs and ballads. The following day they recorded seventeen more and on April 24, now joined by Sonny Terry, fifty more songs were recorded. These are the versions which have stuck in my head since discovering the recording in the 1970s. The songs tell the story of what it means to be human: love, loss, longing, betrayal, bereavement, belief, good times, tough times and of course death.
